How to Draw an Airplane easy with details step-by-step.

Hello, Artists! Today we are drawing an Airplane.

Not life size, of course 😉 But I like your thinking…

Airplanes are giant structures of creative genius. They are thought in someone’s mind, drawn out on paper, made of metal and the FLOWN THROUGH THE AIR!

Imagination, art, design, math, metal smithing, aeronautics…it’s pretty spectacular.

Maybe they should be painted bright colors like fireworks or kites as a celebration, but no. They are painted sensible colors and left to look professional.

Ok, so what do we know of the design of an airplane? They have straight, clean lines and simple shapes. We can do this!

How to draw an airplane step by step

What do you need to draw an airplane?

Supplies you’ll need on hand for drawing an airplane:

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Colored pencils or crayons

Artist tip: As with any drawing it’s important to recognize how much space you are working with. To do this, point to the middle of your paper with your finger or pencil.

This will tell your eyes how much space you have to draw in.

It does not have to be exact!

How to draw an airplane step-by-step

Let’s get started:

1. Draw a light long, thin oval near the middle of your paper.

2. On the right side of the oval, make an indent, have it still connect to the oval. This will be the front windows of the plane.

3. Now, darken the top line, bring the end of the line down just a little. Leave a space for the tail area. On the end of the oval, bring the back line up straight, past the top.

1. For the tail area, draw a short straight horizontal line off of the tallest line. Then from the oval draw a diagonal line up to meet the straight horizontal line.

2. In the middle area of the plane, about a finger width from the bottom line, draw a curved line.

This line will be the end of the front wing, it should be *about * as long as the plane is wide.

Artist tip: to measure you can use your pencil.

How to Draw wings on an airplane

1. To complete the wing, draw a diagonal line from each end of the top of the wing.

These lines should angle back toward the end of the plane (aerodynamics!)… The end of the wing is rounded.

2. Draw a smaller wing at the tail, it will be almost half the size. This wing will have a straighter line at the end of the plane.

3. Off the top of the plane, draw another wing.

This would be the wing on the other side of the plane, but with this perspective we can see about half of that wing. The diagonal lines and rounded end.

Next, we’ll add the detail to the front window.

Plane windows tend to be rounded, drawing an oval from the front of the plane where the indent is.

1. Draw a line through the middle area to separate the window panels.

2. Add passenger windows, these will be circles in a horizontal line through the middle of the plane body.

3. Details: a line along the bottom of the plane and a triangle shape on the tail.

This would be where the logo of the airline would be, if you plan to put on here.

4. Finally it is time to clean up our plane and erase any extra pencil lines.

COLOR!

As the artist you get to choose what your plane looks like; is it traditional or modern?

There you go… You’ve done it!

An Airplane drawing done well.

Let’s see what else we can draw together… next time.
